Welcome to Gamer By Mistake’s July 2024 Game Recommendations! Since it’s the first time I’m writing this here’s what to expect:
- A lineup of indie gems with a spotlight;
- A game that intrigues me;
- Mainstream/AAA Games
I’ll be sharing their release dates while explaining why they caught my eye Let’s dive into our most anticipated games for July.
Quick Note: This list is based on my preferences and the systems I have to play these games.
The Indie Games:
Fallen Leaf
- Release Date: July 9
- Developer: Delta Shore Games
- Platforms: Steam
- Description: “Fallen Leaf is a retro side-scrolling adventure focused on the tight, action-packed level design set in a whimsical world where almost anything goes!”
The obvious Mega-Man inspiration is what initially drew me to Fallen Leaf. Having recently played the original Mega-Man games on Switch Online, I’m now craving something more modern with tighter controls.
Fallen Leaf promises to scratch that itch with its nostalgic yet fresh approach to side-scrolling adventures.
Gestalt: Steam & Cinder
- Release Date: July 16
- Developer: Metamorphosis Games
- Platform: Steam, Nintendo Switch
- Description: “Inspired by 16 and 32-bit classics, Gestalt: Steam & Cinder fuses tight 2D platforming and exhilarating combat with an engrossing, twist-laden narrative in a stunningly handcrafted steampunk world.”
Fans of Symphony of the Night will find Gestalt: Steam & Cinder familiar yet refreshingly different. But if you look deeper you’ll notice how different Gestalt: Steam and Cinder is, especially regarding narrative.
If you enjoy 2D-action games with a deep story, you can’t miss this one.
Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus
- Release Date: July 17
- Developer: Squid Shock Studios, Christopher Stair, Trevor Youngquist
- Platform: Steam, Nintendo Switch, PC, macOS, XBOX X|S, PS5
- Description: “Flow gracefully through a colorful, hand-drawn 2.5D action platformer inspired by Japanese folklore. Engage in acrobatic aerial combat, unlock powerful mystical abilities, and explore an interconnected world of myth as you seek to unravel the mysteries of your origin.”
It’s difficult not to be captivated by the hand-drawn graphics of the game. And, with the demo released, I finally got to see how everything is fluid in motion beautiful to look at.
The controls are tight, boss battles are fun, and the inspired Japanese folklore soundtrack makes this a Metroidvania lookout for in 2024 (GOTY contender?).
Schim
- Release Date: July 18
- Developer: Ewoud van der Werf, Nils Slijkerman
- Platform: Steam, Nintendo Switch, PS5/PS4, XBOX X|S
- Description: “SCHiM is a game about jumping from shadow to shadow in a relaxing and lively environment. This 3D platformer takes elements of light, shadow & animation and adds them directly to the gameplay, delivering an experience that you will only find in SCHiM.”
Years ago me and my friends were conceptualizing a game where you’d play a character that could only move in the shadows. Schim captivated me for executing this vision.
The gameplay seems fun and engaging with a lot of interactions to explore. This coupled with a distinct art direction makes Shchim a standout title even among Indie Games.
Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure
- Release Date: July 25
- Developer: Furniture & Mattress LLC
- Platform: Steam, Nintendo Switch, PS5, Epic Games
- Description: “Find your way in a world of breezy, thoughtful puzzles, along a charming journey of self-discovery.”
The cozy aesthetic initially pulled me in, and the gameplay’s complexity and originality kept me intrigued. Set on an interconnected grid covering the entire world, you’ll need to move tiles to navigate, explore, solve puzzles, and battle.
It’s the first time I’ve seen this type of gameplay and I can’t wait to play it myself when it finally releases!
Spotlight: Dungeons of HInterberg
- Release Date: July 18
- Developer: Microbird Games
- Platform: Steam, XBOX X|S
- Description: “Armed with a sword and a tourist guide, explore the beautiful alpine village of Hinterberg and uncover the magic hidden within its dungeons! Master magic, solve puzzles, slay monsters; all this and more await you in Hinterberg!”
July Indie Spotlight has to go to Dungeons of Hinterberg. I’ve been following this game’s development for a while and I’m eager to get my hands on it this month.
The art style and blend of dungeon crawling with slice-of-life elements make this game unique.
You’ll be exploring dungeons by day and mingling with town folk by night. And, these interactions will reward you with several perks that will come in handy during your dungeon crawling.
It’s been a while since I’ve played something like this and it’ll be a breath of fresh air in my gaming adventures. I’m strongly considering starting streaming to show off this game, so let me know if that’s something you’d like to see!
The Intringuing Game: The New Dempa Men
- Release Date: July 22
- Developer: ??
- Platform: Nintendo Switch
- Description: “What the heck is a Denpa Man?”
June’s Nintendo Direct was amazing and introduced some games to be released in July. And, the most intriguing and weird was The New Dempa Man.
Describing The New Dempa Man is difficult since it seems like a mix of different genres. It has dungeon-crawling elements mixed with JRPG battles, monster-catching mechanics, and base decoration much like Animal Crossing.
Everything about this title confuses and intrigues me to the point of wanting to play it. I need more clarification on this title and watching the video and visiting their official website makes me more confused!
This title will be free to play when it is released so let me know your thoughts, please!!
Mainstream/AAA Games
This would be the place to list several great AAA games or mainstream games to be released in July.
But in reality, there wasn’t much that caught my eye. So here are 2 games from popular developers and publishers to be released on the Nintendo Switch this month:
One Piece Odyssey
- Release Date: July 26
- Developer: ILCA, Inc.
- Platform: Nintendo Switch
- Description: ”A brand new RPG set in the world of the popular anime, ONE PIECE! Play as members of the Straw Hat Crew in a fantastic adventure set in the ONE PIECE world!”
One Piece Odyssey was released last this to mixed reviews and I can now see why. It was developed by ILCA, Inc., Infamous for the remakes of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
But, as a massive One Piece fan I want to experience it by myself. Although I had the chance to play it on my Steam Deck I was focused on other games in February.
So, for me, the portability aspect of the Nintendo Switch would be a factor to consider. But rather the fact that this game will have a physical release and I love games with great cover art.
Still, it will be difficult to justify purchasing this at full price so I might wait for a massive price drop in the future!
Nintendo World Championship: Nes Edition
- Release Date: July 18
- Developer: Nintendo
- Platform: Nintendo Switch
- Description: “Compete in this Nintendo exclusive or tune in to watch the action. While it may not appeal to everyone, it’s worth mentioning as the only Nintendo exclusive of July.”
I can’t say this is a game I’d play much, but it’s the only Nintendo exclusive of July and felt obligated to include it.
And, it’s an excuse to talk about the current state of the Nintendo Switch. It’s at its last legs and there you notice that there isn’t much effort being made by Nintendo to develop console-selling titles.
But, if you like NES and games and love speedrunning then this game is for you. If not just stick with the games available on Switch Online
Closing Remarks and Future Updates
These were my recommendations for games released in July 2024!
As you can see there aren’t many AAA games I’m comfortable recommending this month so I had to compensate with Indie Games! Also, please don’t expect a review on each, it’s impossible for a father with a 9-5!
And while we’re on that note, I’m writing an ebook called “How to Find More Time for Gaming”, if this interests you consider Subscribing to my Newsletter for updates and receive the first chapter for free soon.
