I don’t know why, but Lofi music is all I need to get into the zone whenever I want to be productive. So, when I heard about a cozy Lofi productivity game mixed with monster collecting being released, it immediately piqued my interest. I bought it almost immediately and don’t regret it, but there are some areas of improvement that I’ll address. Join me in this Spirit City Lofi Sessions review to see if it’s worth it.
Gameplay/Interactions
First, let’s talk about the main draw of this game to me: the Spirits. These will keep you company during your daily grind or chill sessions. But, you’ll need to set the right mood to befriend them.
On top of playing the in-game radio music, you can add several sounds like a fireplace, a soothing wind, or even smooth rain.
Matching these with the perfect location and activity, like writing or even knitting, and the right time of day will make your Spiritdex glow, alerting you that a spirit is bound to appear.
You can always check the Spiritdex itself for details, but you’ll need to level up your Spiritographer level to unlock more. This can be done by simply listening to music, capturing Spirits, and completing daily quests that involve interacting with productivity tools.
For all Pomodoro enthusiasts, you can use the in-game timer to get things done. And beforehand, you can use the to-do list so you don’t forget anything. At the end, you can reflect on the work you’ve done and write your thoughts down in the journal.
If you conclude that you need to improve in a given area, open the Habits and write down something you’d like to do daily to achieve your goals.
Of course, there are many ways to interact with this tool. This is just an example of how I used them.
They are great, simple, and effective, but I still prefer to use my Hobonichi Planner to plan and document my day. However, I do use the timer constantly to keep track of time!
Visuals and Customization
The visuals blend nicely with the overall chill-lo-fi aesthetic, and being able to customize your space and character makes it easy to get into the mood for different tasks.
You can use the Decoration menu to choose the color of your walls, desk, curtains, and so on. The same goes for your Lofi Avatar, where you can alter its appearance to your liking and dress it up with different cozy clothes.
However, you’ll need to spend a lot of time with this game to unlock every single piece of customizable item. You’ll start with a decent amount of options, but to get more, you’ll need Spirit credits earned by leveling up, and the progress you’ll make slows down after capturing every single Spirit, which aren’t that many for now.
Music Options
The music is just great. The game has a decent number of tracks, and you can play them for hours without it becoming repetitive. However, if it does come to that point, you can always use the Web Music Browser and play music directly from YouTube.
With this option, you can even listen to other genres if you want to. So if Rock ‘n’ Roll and Heavy Metal are your thing, crank up the sound of those columns! And don’t worry, Spirits seem to like any genre of music and will appear regardless of the music playing.
The only drawback of using the Web Music Browser is that you won’t be able to play Live Streams such as Lofi Girl. It’s a real shame since it would have been perfect for this game!
Conclusion
Talking about Spirit City: Lofi Sessions as a game is probably not the most accurate thing to do, and you should not buy it with that mindset. This is a task management app with great tools for your daily grind.
I enjoyed collecting Spirits and the different customizable colors each has, but there are so few of them that I got them all in about two days of playing. I would appreciate it if they added more and maybe removed the credits and just gave the end-consumers every single available customization unlocked from the start.
I keep coming back not because I yearn to level up and get enough credits to maybe purchase a new piece of cloth. I come back because this is basically a customizable Lofi Girl. I can control where my character is placed, what he’ll be doing, at what time of the day with which music, and with which cute Spirit I’ll have by my side.
The devs seem to listen to feedback, and that’s amazing because that shows commitment to improving what they already have well established. I can say that as the game is right now, it’s definitely worth your money.
And with this, I conclude my Spirit City Lofi review! If any part of what I wrote resonated with you, then you know what to do!
