The Nintendo DS is home to some great online games whose functionalities have been restored thanks to Wiimmfi. So today, I’d like to present you with the Best Nintendo DS online games, but with a twist. I’ll give you two lists: one with the most obvious games you should play and another with some questionable choices.
Note: Before starting consider reading my article about “How to Connect to the Nintendo DS Wi-Fi.”
Popular Nintendo DS Online Games:
1. Mario Kart DS
Mario Kart will always be the best online multiplayer game Nintendo has to offer on any console. If you’re a Nintendo fan, you already know what to expect; you’ll be facing off against different people in frenetic and rage-inducing races. Caution is always advised when playing with friends.
Online Functionality: Race online!
2. Animal Crossing: Wild World
I still remember when Animal Crossing: Wild World was released. Despite everyone being super excited about it, I just couldn’t see why. Flash forward to 2024, and I can say that I’m a fan of Animal Crossing, having played New Leaf and New Horizons.
It’s always a treat to build your perfect little town and have other people come in to gaze at your creation!
Online Functionality: Visit other players’ towns and interact with them!
3. Every single mainline Pokémon game:
From Diamond and Pearl to Pokémon Black 2/White 2, you can access their online features fully, meaning you can trade, access the GTS, and battle!
But honestly, the best part is the fact that you can pick up event Pokémon from the Mystery Gift. Go get them while you still can!
Online Functionality: Battle, Trade, Mystery Gift Pokémon.
4. Metroid Prime Hunters
This game’s multiplayer was awesome when it came out, and it still amazes me to this day. It’s mind-blowing how this is one of Nintendo’s best attempts at a first-person shooter, and it’s on a Nintendo DS!
If you can get some people to play this, it’s a must; you won’t believe how well it controls and runs!
Online Functionality: Multiplayer Battles.
5. Sonic Rush Adventure
It was still weird to see Sonic on a Nintendo console back then. But I’m glad we got the Sonic Rush Adventure games.
Although I still prefer the first entry, only this one offers a multiplayer mode where you can face off directly against other players. Races are fast and fun, as Sonic games should be.
Online Functionality: Online Functionality: Race online against other players.
Underrated Nintendo DS Online Games:
1. Phantay Star 0
I love Phantasy Star Online, so when I heard there was a spin-off on the Nintendo DS with online multiplayer, it blew my mind.
Among all the games on this list, this one stands out as the best, and surprisingly, not many people know about it. If you’re interested in Sci-fi Action-RPGs, then this is a title you can’t afford to miss.
Plus, there’s even an active Discord community, so be sure to check it out!
Online Functionality:
2. Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing (DS)
Who says Mario is the only racing game worth playing on the Nintendo DS? Much like the other versions of this game, Sega All-Stars Racing is a very enjoyable online experience, and less stressful than Mario Kart, in my opinion!
With its diverse character roster and creative track designs, it succeeds in distinguishing itself apart from its competition.
Online Functionality: Race Online with other players!
3 & 4. Dragon Quest Monsters 2 and Digimon World Dusk/Dawn
What I’m about to say might shock you, but Pokémon is not the only monster-taming game on the Nintendo DS with online features. There are dozens, and these are my favorites.
Although it can be challenging to find someone to play with, Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 and Digimon World Dusk/Dawn have fantastic battling mechanics.
Building a team can be a bit tedious at times, but the effort is undoubtedly worth it!
Online Functionality: Battle Online with other players
5. Bomberman 2 (DS)
Probably the least popular game on this list, but I had the pleasure of playing it online way back then, and it was a BLAST (pun intended?).
It’s Bomberman, so you’ll be trying to place your bombs strategically to blow up your friends while laughing all the way. It’s hard not to have fun with this one, hence its place on the list!
Online Functionality: Blast your friends in multiplayer battles!
And that's it!
This list contains what I feel are the Best Nintendo DS Online Games that can still be enjoyed today with the help of Wiimfi (Learn how to Connect to the Nintendo DS Wi-Fi).
More will keep being added to their list of functional games so be sure to check from time to time if your favorite is on there!
Also, if you feel I’m missing a key game let me and I’ll consider adding it.
Have fun!
