The Nintendo 3DS online service will be shutting down in April, and I think it’s the perfect time to reminisce about the games I’ve played the most and the good memories their online component brought to me. So, here’s a list of what I consider to be the Best Nintendo 3DS Online!
Mario Kart 7
With no surprise, Mario Kart 7 is on this list and honestly, there isn’t much to say.
It’s one of the best Mario Kart games I’ve ever played, and playing online is just pure chaotic and fun even today.
And, it’s amazing that even more than 10 years after its release you can still find a room full of people to play almost instantly! So, it’s time for you to dust off the Nintendo 3DS and hop online while you still can!
Monster Hunter Generations
Believe it or not, there are still some people lingering online even after all this time! Playing this game online really helped me get through the absurd amount of content it has.
This is one of the most packed Monster Hunter games accessible to date, and tackling all of its content will take you hundreds of hours to complete, even with a group of skilled hunters. I’ll always remember fondly the hours I spent hunting with strangers while streaming.
But, if you don’t want to commit to this game because of the lack of Online play in the future be sure to check why you should play Monster Hunter Generation Ultimate on Switch!
Pokemon Sun/Moon:
The 3DS is home to a great number of Pokémon games with online functionalities. But my favorite of all of them is Pokémon Sun, and subsequently, it’s the one I’ve played the most online.
It was the first time I gave the online ranked ladder a try, and it was a blast climbing it until the release of Ultra Sun. It was the game that helped me solidify my love for competitive play in Pokémon which still lasts to this day.
Monster Hunter Stories:
Monster Hunter Stories came late in the Nintendo 3DS life, but I still regard it as one of the best games this system has to offer. And while short-lived, my time playing it online was very memorable.
Breeding my perfect little monster with the craziest and most unexpected setups made every online match a thrill! There weren’t that many players who were serious about it, so I’d easily wreck through most teams. But when I encountered someone who knew what they were doing, the matches were the most intense I’ve ever experienced, and can still remember some of them vividly.
Smash Bros 4 3DS:
For this post, I checked how many hours of Smash I’ve played on my 3DS, and the number is an impressive 667 hours. It’s even more impressive when considering that I had lost a save file that already had a little over 500 hours of playtime.
This was my introduction to the competitive scene and made me love the franchise even more. I even entered a couple of tournaments and didn’t do too bad, considering I was playing on a Nintendo 2DS at the time versus people with controllers!
I love this game, flaws and all. It’s still a game that, once in a few months, I turn on and smile while beating people with Yoshi in For Glory.
Conclusion
These were the best Nintendo 3DS online games I’ve had the pleasure of playing!
And, it was fun looking back at these games and even attempting to play them online in 2024. The only one I couldn’t find a single person to play with was Monster Hunter Stories, sadly, since it’s one of my favorites… Still, I’ll make sure to check it out once in a while until the inevitable shutdown of the Online Services in a few months!
Here’s to hoping the fanbase finds a workaround so we can all continue playing our favorite games online with friends and strangers in the future, much like the Nintendo DS… But until then, don’t forget that you can still forge new everlasting memories with this awesome console; just be quick!
